“The Summer Hikaru Died” (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) is a manga illustrated by Mokumokuren. This is a slice of life series that follows two young boys, Hikaru and Yoshiki, living their teenage years together. They are best friends, but one day during the summer, Hikaru disappears, only to reappear a week later. He meets up with his best friend Yoshiki, who notices the changes in his dear friend, thus starting a series of illusions that take away at Yoshiki’s sanity. Under the sun, they eat ice-cream together, and for the first time, Yoshiki voices his doubts by telling Hikaru that he is different from the friend he had known once. Hikaru, in response, reveals the dark secret that he had been hiding from Yoshiki all this time…
This is the start to this horror manga that has taken the Yaoi (Boy Love, BL) scene by storm. It is not only different from the usual omegaverse or even dom & sub verse manga, but it is a thrilling series that unwraps itself little by little, giving you small hints along the way.
It seems like it is set in modern day Japan, in a rural area where mysterious entities seem to lurk around every corner. It is labeled as BL by fans for its use of romantic tension between the main characters, because, not only are they best friends, Hikaru throughout the series has voiced his deep feelings for Yoshiki openly, saying that he wants to protect him from danger and literally gives him “a piece of himself” later on in the story. We can also sense the close mindedness of the village, being in a rural area of Japan, making it hard for a person, let alone a young boy, to really come out as gay or lesbian. “Hikaru” has never really felt part of the village and he finds comfort in his relationship with Yoshiki, making their relationship more than just ”friendship”. Yoshiki seems to also harbor feelings for the Hikaru of his memories and the current one, saying that without him “his life wouldn’t have meaning”, going as far as trying to ‘fix’ the friend that seemingly came back from death, and is not who he appears to be. However, this aspect of the story is never really mentioned, the story shows you what is happening without telling you explicitly that they might be more than just close companions. It does not get in the way of the story, and leaves the reader to interpret it however they want. The ship between Yoshiki and Hikaru is called “Yoshikaru” and it is a perfect representation of the saying “opposites attract” because on the one hand you have Yoshiki, a black haired boy with a quiet and calm personality, while Hikaru is the energetic white hair that always has a smile on his face. It also contains the “I will protect you with my life” and “you are worth my everything” tropes, that are exceptionally sought after by the Fujoshis (female fans that read stories featuring boy love), depending on the reader’s tastes of course 😉 .
The art is clean but at the same time messy, giving you the right amount of noise to understand what is going on on each panel. Not only that, the illustrator switches from a more cartoony/manga style, to a more realistic one when the plot requires it, which furthers the emotional and visual impact of each page. It can get scary at times, even spooking you with a sudden change of tone, making you anxious and curious as to what will happen next.
This manga is able to build tension and it has a nice phase, not feeling overly dragged out for the sake of filler nor too rushed to tell us its story. Of course it only has 4 volumes at the time of writing, but we are sure that it will continue to give us exciting arcs to read. It contains angst and is a slow burn story, but still, we recommend it for those who are seeking a new manga to read or are fans of the yaoi genre in particular. If the subject matter bothers you, you can even look past it, for it does not force you to see their relationship in any kind of way, and enjoy the mystery that surrounds this boy called Hikaru

“L’estate in cui Hikaru è morto” (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) è un manga illustrato da Mokumokuren. Questa serie slice of life segue due ragazzi giovani, Hikaru e Yoshiki, che vivono insieme i loro anni dell’adolescenza. Sono migliori amici, ma un giorno durante l’estate, Hikaru scompare per poi riapparire una settimana dopo. Si incontra con il suo migliore amico Yoshiki, che nota i cambiamenti nel suo amico, dando così inizio a una serie di illusioni che mettono a dura prova la sanità mentale di Yoshiki. Sotto il sole, condividono un gelato e, per la prima volta, Yoshiki esprime i suoi dubbi dicendo a Hikaru che è diverso dall’amico che conosceva una volta. Hikaru, in risposta, rivela il segreto oscuro che ha nascosto a Yoshiki per tutto questo tempo…
Questo è l’inizio di questo manga horror che ha fatto un po’ esplodere la scena dei manga yaoi (Boy Love, BL). Non è solo diverso dal solito omegaverse o persino dal dom & sub verse manga, ma è una serie avvincente che si svela poco a poco, dandoti piccoli indizi lungo la storia. Sembra essere ambientato nel Giappone moderno, in una zona rurale dove entità misteriose sembrano nascondersi dietro ogni angolo.
Questo manga è etichettato come BL dai suoi fan per il suo uso della tensione romantica tra i protagonisti. Non sono solo migliori amici, Hikaru nel corso della storia, esprime i suoi profondi sentimenti per Yoshiki, dicendo che vuole proteggerlo dai pericoli che sembrano vagare nel loro villaggio e , più avanti nella storia, gli dona letteralmente “una parte di sé“. Possiamo anche percepire la mentalità chiusa del villaggio, essendo in una zona rurale del Giappone, rendendo difficile per una persona dichiararsi apertamente gay o lesbica. “Hikaru” non si è mai sentito veramente parte del villaggio e trova conforto nella sua relazione con Yoshiki, rendendo il loro rapporto molto più di una semplice “amicizia”. Anche Yoshiki sembra nutrire sentimenti verso il Hikaru dei suoi ricordi e quello del presente, dicendo che senza di lui “la sua vita non avrebbe senso”, arrivando al punto di cercare di ‘aggiustare’ l’amico che sembra essere tornato dalla morte e che non è chi si dimostra di essere. Il fumetto ti obbliga in nessun modo a vedere la loro relazione in nessun tipo di modo, e ti narra semplicemente il corso della sua storia. Questa sfumatura della loro relazione non intralcia la trama e il manga ti lascia la libertà di interpretarla come vuoi. La ship tra Yoshiki e Hikaru è chiamata “Yoshikaru” ed è una perfetta rappresentazione del detto “gli opposti si attraggono” perché Yoshiki e Hikaru hanno caratteri totalmente opposti: Yoshiki è un ragazzo dai capelli neri con una personalità tranquilla e calma, mentre Hikaru è energetico, dai capelli bianchi e che ha sempre un sorriso sul suo volto. Include inoltre tropi come “ti proteggerò con la mia vita” e “sei il mio universo” molto ricercati dalle Fujoshi (fan femminili che leggono storie di boy love), a seconda dei gusti ovviamente 😉 .
L’arte è pulita ma allo stesso tempo caotica, dandoti la giusta quantità di rumore per capire cosa sta accadendo in ogni pannello. Non solo, l’illustratore passa da uno stile più cartoonesco/manga a uno più realistico quando la trama lo richiede, aumentando l’impatto emotivo e visivo di ogni pagina. Può diventare spaventoso a volte, sorprendendoti con un improvviso cambio di tono, facendoti sentire ansioso e curioso di sapere cosa accadrà dopo.
Questo manga è in grado di costruire tensione e ha un buon ritmo, non sembra eccessivamente dilatato per filler né troppo affrettato per raccontarci la sua storia. Naturalmente, al momento della scrittura, ha solo 4 volumi, ma siamo sicuri che continuerà ad offrire archi narrativi emozionanti da leggere. Contiene angst ed è una storia a combustione lenta, ma lo consigliamo a chi cerca un nuovo manga da leggere o è fan del genere yaoi in particolare. Se questo tema non è di tuo gusto, lo puoi anche sorvolare, poiché la storia non ti obbliga a vedere la loro relazione in alcun modo specifico, e goderti il mistero che circonda questo ragazzo chiamato Hikaru.
